Harrisburg Mall Opens New Security Monitoring Area Including Swatara Township Police Substation
Substation relocated from Food Court area also features security,
customer relations, Mall information and lost and found services
HARRISBURG, PA (June 19, 2013) – Harrisburg Mall has officially opened its new Security Monitoring
Area, a facility equipped with a functional substation for the Swatara Township Police Department, as
well as an amenity that offers customer relations, Mall information, lost and found and other visitor
services. Formerly positioned near the Food Court, the Monitoring Area is now located directly inside one
of the Mall’s main entrances.
Harrisburg Mall, owned by a partnership of St. John Properties and Petrie Ross Ventures, features
more than 70 tenants, including anchor stores Macy’s, Bass Pro Shops, 2nd & Charles, and Regal
Cinema’s Great Escape Harrisburg Mall Stadium 14. The one million square foot regional mall is located
on Paxton Street.
The Security Monitoring Area features glass window walls that make the interior of the space
highly visible to Mall patrons, and an upgraded video surveillance system that tracks activity throughout
the Mall in real-time. The area also includes a reception station that provides Mall information and
directions, wheelchair and stroller rentals, Mall directories and brochures of nearby attractions and a lost
and found area. The Swatara Township Police Substation is outfitted with kitchen and restroom facilities,
battery charging stations and desks for police officers to complete reports and other written documents.
“Our new Security Monitoring Area is front and center for all consumers, merchants and visitors
of the Mall to see,” explained Bill Russell, Director of Harrisburg Mall. “While other properties tend
to hide security operations from the general public, we believe this open positioning communicates our
pro-active strategy to maintain a shopper-friendly environment. The glass windows allow anyone to
observe our state-of-the-art security equipment in action, as well as the Mall’s vigilant approach and ‘zero
tolerance’ security policy.”
Earlier this year, Harrisburg Mall completed a comprehensive modernization and strengthening
of its Mall-wide security monitoring system package, which included the addition of interior and exterior
security cameras and the installation of state-of-the-art monitors. This strategy is supplemented by a parttime and full-time force of Mall security officers who patrol the grounds on a 24/7 basis. The security system was developed and installed by Intervid, Inc., which works with regional malls and shopping
centers throughout the country.
Located on a 61-acre parcel on Paxton Street off Exit 45 of Interstate 83, Harrisburg Mall has
approximately 70 tenants, including anchors Macy’s, Bass Pro Shops, and Regal Cinema’s Great Escape
Harrisburg Mall Stadium 14, plus Aeropostale, Bath and Body Works, 2nd & Charles, Champs Sports,
Claire’s, Express, Foot Locker, Kay Jewelers, New York and Company, Radio Shack, Victoria’s Secret
and others. Free-standing Toys “R” Us and Applebee’s are also part of the tenant mix. One anchor store —
previously occupied by Boscov’s until its corporate bankruptcy in 2008 — remains available for lease. The
Mall received a $60 million exterior and interior renovation approximately five years ago and St. John
Properties and Petrie Ross have undertaken a wide range of improvements since they purchased the mall
The population within a 10-mile radius of Harrisburg Mall exceeds 360,000 people, including
